Vehicle Key Cutting & Programming

In order to combat rising car crime, most cars produced since around 1994 have a transponder chip built into the vehicle key. This communicates with the cars immobiliser system everytime the car ignition system is switched on. If the car does not recognise the key then the car won't start. If you only have one key to your vehicle it makes sense to get another one cut. If you were unfortunate enough to lose that key you would have to have the cars locks and electronic control unit replaced/reprogrammed to a completely new key. The cost of this can run into many hundreds of pounds.
