DOOR CONTROLS

A door closer is an important link in the control of fire and smoke and could also save lives.  The closing device standard BS EN 1154: 1997 is the minimum requirement for any door control manufacturer.  This standard porvides details on product types, classification of use cycle testing, corrosion resistance, performance requirements test methodology and product marking.
What does BS EN 1154 Mean to you?

This standard classifies door closing devices using a 6 digit coding system.  Each digit relates to a particular feature of the product measured against the standard performance requirements ie:483113
Digit 1:- Category of use

Identifies the angle of opening.  Grade 4 means the closer will close the door from 180 degree aprox.  Grade 3 closers will close the door from 105 degree.
Digit 2:- Test Cycles

Included in 500,000 cycle test. 8 is the only grade that can be obtained.
Digit 3:- Test door mass/size

Each number in this category identifies the closer size and its suitability for use on these doors.  Adjustment strength closers are identified by showing both the minimum and maximum strength.
Digit 4:- Fire Behavior

Based on the results of the fire tests to BS476:part22. 1 is the grade given to the closers that are suitable for use on fire or smoke doors.
Digit 5:- Safety in use

A compulsory part of the standard, which ensures the closer, presents no hazard to the persons using the door.
Digit 6:- Corrosion resistance

Five grades are idintified form 0, which had no identified resistance to 4, which is very high resistance.

Grades are obtained after closers have been included in salt spray test and had their performances re-confirmed after the test.
